Dirk Kuyt Admits He “Didn’t Like” Raheem Sterling Despite Admiring His Talent

A Liverpool legend has revealed that although he was impressed by Raheem Sterling’s talent in the Premier League, he “didn’t like” him.

After losing his place at Chelsea, Sterling’s contract with the London club was terminated at the end of January, despite having 18 months remaining. The decision made the 31-year-old a free agent, allowing him to sign for any interested club outside the transfer window.

He ultimately chose Feyenoord, with head coach Robin van Persie stating that Sterling moved to the Eredivisie to “rediscover the joy” of football.

Early Liverpool Rise

Sterling joined Liverpool from Queens Park Rangers’ youth academy in February 2010 for an initial €450,000 fee, potentially rising to €2 million based on first-team appearances.

On March 24, 2012, he became Liverpool’s third-youngest debutant when he came on as a substitute against Wigan Athletic at just 17 years and 107 days old.

He quickly became an important first-team player during his three seasons at Anfield. However, not all teammates warmed to him — including club legend Dirk Kuyt.

Kuyt’s Honest Admission

Speaking about Sterling’s rise and eventual move to Dutch football, Kuyt acknowledged his talent but admitted his feelings were influenced by Sterling’s controversial 2015 transfer to Manchester City.

“It was years ago, he was 16 at the time. We trained together a few times and played some matches.”

“In the end, I didn’t like him that much because he moved quickly to a big rival. But Raheem Sterling is certainly considered a fantastic player in English football with an outstanding record.”

Sterling’s departure from Liverpool to Manchester City left a lasting impression, but his achievements in English football remain widely respected.
