Why Real Madrid Were Able To Make 6 Substitutions

Real Madrid won a comprehensive 4-1 home victory over Elche in the 28th week of La Liga.

During the match, Elche made six substitutions, more than the usual limit of five changes, after one of their players suffered a concussion in the first half after a collision with Eduardo Camavinga.

The technical staff decided to substitute the player as a medical precaution.

Under new football rules, a team is allowed to make an additional substitution if a player leaves the field due to a concussion.

The regulation also gives the opposing team the right to make an additional substitution, in order to maintain the principle of equality.

Based on this rule, Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa also took advantage of this clause of the regulation, making six substitutions during the match.

This situation created an unusual scene in La Liga, as a similar situation does not happen that often in football.
