Xabi Alonso is ready to take charge of Liverpool, but only if certain clear conditions are met in the summer transfer window, Spanish media report.
The position of current coach Arne Slot has come under pressure after poor results, including a home draw against Tottenham, which was accompanied by negative reactions from fans.
Although he won the title in his first season, his future at Anfield remains unclear.
Alonso, who was previously on Liverpool’s radar as a replacement for Jürgen Klopp, is once again seen as the ideal candidate to take charge of the team.
However, according to reports, the Spanish coach wants strong guarantees for the sports project and has requested three key reinforcements before accepting the offer.
According to sources, Alonso’s requirements are a defender, a midfielder and a striker. At the top of the list is Alessandro Bastoni – the Inter defender, who is seen as the ideal long-term replacement for captain Virgil van Dijk, who is nearing the end of his career.
Also seen as an important reinforcement is Adam Wharton – Crystal Palace midfielder, who would create a proper partnership with Ryan Gravenberch in midfield.
Last, but not least, is Bradley Barcola – Paris Saint-Germain striker, who is seen as a necessary reinforcement for the offensive department.
Liverpool have struggled in several areas this season. The defence has been inconsistent, while the midfield has lacked consistency, despite names like Alexis Mac Allister.
In attack, Mohamed Salah’s form has declined, while the departure of Luis Díaz and Cody Gakpo’s unconvincing performances have caused the team to lose efficiency.
The decision rests with the leaders.
Alonso is open to taking over the team, but only if the club’s board meets these requirements. However, it remains to be seen whether Fenway Sports Group will invest large sums again, especially if Liverpool fail to secure a Champions League place.
The final decision is expected in the coming weeks, to continue with Slot or to start a new era with Alonso at the helm.
