Bruno Guimaraes Set for Months Out in Major Newcastle Blow

Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimarães is expected to be ruled out for a couple of months after sustaining a hamstring injury.

The Brazilian midfielder limped off in the closing stages of the 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, in just his second appearance since returning from an ankle problem. Head coach Eddie Howe admitted at the time that the player was “a little bit worried,” having never previously experienced a hamstring issue.

Newcastle’s Record Without Guimarães

The absence represents a significant setback for Newcastle.

Since his debut in February 2022, Howe’s side have failed to win any of the 10 Premier League matches in which Guimarães did not feature. In contrast, with him in the lineup, Newcastle hold a 53.1% win rate in the top flight.

Statistically, the difference is clear:

  • 1.8 points per game with Guimarães

  • 1.9 goals scored per match

  • 1.2 goals conceded on average

His influence in midfield has been central to Newcastle’s stability and attacking output.

Midfield Options Ahead of Crucial Fixtures

Newcastle now face a demanding run of games, starting with the FA Cup fourth-round clash against Aston Villa.

For the trip to Villa Park, Howe has only three senior central midfielders available:

  • Sandro Tonali

  • Joe Willock

  • Jacob Ramsey

There is some encouragement, however, as Joelinton is expected to return soon from a groin injury, while Lewis Miley is not anticipated to be sidelined for long with a dead leg.

Newcastle must now navigate a crucial stretch of the season without their midfield talisman.
