BAFTA Under Fire After Investigation Reveals Failures Over On-Air Incident
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has released the findings of an independent investigation into a controversial incident involving a racial slur during this year’s awards ceremony.
The incident occurred at the 79th BAFTA Awards on February 22, when an audience member with Tourette syndrome—identified as activist John Davidson—shouted a racial slur while actors Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were on stage presenting the award for Best Visual Effects.
The offensive language was broadcast during the BBC’s delayed transmission of the ceremony, prompting backlash. The BBC later issued an apology for failing to edit out the remark and confirmed that it had been removed from the version available on BBC iPlayer.
An independent review commissioned by BAFTA and conducted by RISE Associates found “structural weaknesses” in the organization’s planning, escalation procedures, and crisis response coordination. According to the report, BAFTA did not fully recognize the risks associated with a live broadcast environment, and early warning signs were not properly escalated.
The investigation concluded that while there was no malicious intent behind the incident, existing systems were not robust enough to handle the complexity of modern live events.
“The issues identified are not a failure of intent, but evidence that current systems were insufficient,” the report stated, adding that improved communication, clearer operational structures, and better planning are necessary to prevent similar incidents in the future.
BAFTA acknowledged the findings and said it has already begun implementing reforms, including strengthening escalation processes, improving event planning strategies, and addressing cultural and knowledge gaps within the organization.
In a public statement, BAFTA also issued a broad apology:
“We apologise unreservedly to the Black community, to the disability community—including those with Tourette syndrome—and to everyone affected by this incident.”
The organization emphasized its ongoing commitment to diversity, inclusion, and accountability, while acknowledging that such efforts do not place it above criticism.
