The End of an Era: José María Giménez to Leave Atlético Madrid This Summer

After 13 seasons and over 300 appearances, José María Giménez is set to bid farewell to Atlético Madrid. The 31-year-old Uruguayan, who arrived as a teenager in 2013 for less than €1 million, has been the emotional and defensive heartbeat of Diego Simeone’s project for over a decade.

Despite a contract that runs until 2028, reports from RadioMarca and Football España confirm that the club and player have reached a “gentleman’s agreement” to part ways this June.

Why Is the “Stalwart” Leaving?

The decision is a pragmatic one for both parties, driven by three main factors:

  1. Injuries: Giménez has missed a significant portion of the 2025/26 season (including a 7-game stretch due to a hamstring injury). His “warrior” playstyle has taken a toll, making him a rotation player rather than an undisputed starter.

  2. The Wage Bill: Earning between €6m and €7m net per year, he is one of the club’s highest earners. Moving him on allows Atleti to reinvest in a younger, more durable defense.

  3. The Promise: In recognition of his loyalty, Atlético has reportedly promised to let him leave on a free transfer if he secures a move to a specific destination that respects his legacy.

The Race for Josema: Boca or Milan?

Two very different paths are opening up for the Uruguayan international:

  • Boca Juniors: President Juan Román Riquelme has reportedly been in talks with Giménez for over three months. The plan is for him to join the Argentine giants on a free transfer immediately following the 2026 World Cup.

  • AC Milan: The Rossoneri have long admired Giménez and were previously quoted a €30m price tag. With the news of a potential free agency, Milan—and other Serie A clubs—are now on high alert to keep him in Europe’s top flight.
