Xabi Alonso reaches agreement to manage the English giant

Spanish coach Xabi Alonso could make a sensational return to English giants Liverpool.

According to reports from Spanish media outlet OK Diario, he has already reached a verbal agreement with the Reds to take over the team from the 2026/27 season.

According to the report, the deal envisages a three-year contract, but its activation depends heavily on the performance of current Liverpool manager Arne Slot.

It is even said that this deal could be cancelled if Slot manages to lead Liverpool to Champions League triumph this season.

The first informal contacts between the parties reportedly took place in late November, at a time when Alonso was facing pressure at his current club. At that time, Liverpool executives began to consider the possibility of bringing their former midfielder back to the bench starting next summer.

Interest in Alonso is nothing new. In the summer of 2024, he was on the radar of Liverpool and Bayern Munich after the great success he achieved in Germany, when he won the title and the cup without suffering a single defeat in the championship.

However, at the time the 44-year-old decided to stay at his club and rejected offers from bigger clubs. It now remains to be seen whether his return to Anfield will materialise in the near future.
