Tottenham Hotspur are exploring the possibility of reappointing Mauricio Pochettino following the dismissal of Thomas Frank, though any potential reunion may not materialise until after the 2026 World Cup.
Spurs currently sit 16th in the Premier League, just five points above the relegation zone, and are scrambling to stabilise their season after a dramatic downturn in form.
Pochettino Back on the Radar
According to reports, Tottenham’s hierarchy are keen to bring Pochettino back to north London. The Argentine remains a hugely popular figure among supporters, who sang his name during the recent defeat to Newcastle.
Pochettino spent five years at Spurs between 2014 and 2019, guiding the club to a Champions League final and overseeing multiple Premier League title challenges. His side also completed an unbeaten final season at White Hart Lane, widely regarded as one of the club’s strongest modern eras.
However, he is currently under contract as head coach of the United States men’s national team, with his deal tied to the 2026 World Cup. That could delay any move unless negotiations accelerate. Sources suggest Pochettino would be open to returning if formally approached, but uncertainty remains over whether he would consider the role should Tottenham suffer relegation.
Interim Appointment Likely
Given the timing and complexity of a Pochettino return, Spurs are expected to consider an interim solution.
Former striker Robbie Keane has emerged as a potential short-term candidate, though he is currently managing Hungarian side Ferencváros. Internally, John Heitinga, who recently joined Frank’s coaching staff, is another option, although the club are believed to favour an external appointment.
Roberto De Zerbi, who has just left Marseille, is also reportedly admired, while previous interest has been shown in Oliver Glasner, Andoni Iraola and Marco Silva.
Survival the Immediate Priority
Tottenham confirmed Frank’s departure in a formal statement, stating:
“The club has taken the decision to make a change in the Men’s Head Coach position and Thomas Frank will leave today.
Results and performances have led the Board to conclude that a change at this point in the season is necessary.”
Spurs have not won a Premier League match in 2026, with their last league victory coming on December 28. With 12 matches remaining, their immediate focus is on avoiding a relegation battle, beginning with a high-stakes clash against Arsenal.
Whether through an interim appointment or a long-term reunion with Pochettino, Tottenham’s next move could define the club’s direction for years to come.
