Manchester City midfielder Rodri has been charged with misconduct by the Football Association following comments he made about officiating after his side’s 2-2 draw against Tottenham earlier this month.
The Spain international criticised referee Robert Jones after Dominic Solanke’s goal was allowed to stand, suggesting the official had not been “neutral” in his decision-making.
Rodri is accused of acting in an improper manner by making remarks that imply bias and question the integrity of a match official. He has until 18 February to respond to the charge.
Controversial Turning Point
City had taken a 2-0 lead at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before Solanke’s 53rd-minute goal shifted the momentum of the match. Rodri claimed the incident — which he believed involved a foul on defender Marc Guehi — proved decisive in the final outcome.
After the match, he expressed frustration, stating that repeated decisions had gone against City in recent games. While insisting he respects referees, he urged officials to “pay attention” to key incidents.
Panel Verdict on Key Incidents
The Premier League’s Key Match Incidents Panel later reviewed the game and supported the decision to allow Solanke’s goal by a 4-1 majority, ruling that the striker played the ball before contact was made.
However, the same panel unanimously concluded that Rodri should have been sent off late in the match. Already on a yellow card, he committed a foul that was deemed worthy of a second booking, but the referee opted not to issue a red card.
The situation adds further controversy to an already tense encounter, with City currently sitting second in the Premier League, four points behind leaders Arsenal.
Rodri now faces potential disciplinary action depending on the FA’s ruling once his response is submitted.
