Both Liverpool and Real Madrid must shift focus to alternative centre-back targets this summer after Dayot Upamecano committed his future to Bayern Munich until 2030.
The France international had entered the final six months of his previous deal, with Bayern reportedly issuing an ultimatum amid stalled talks. Sporting director Christoph Freund hailed Upamecano as the “complete package,” explaining why both European giants had considered a free transfer a massive opportunity.
Liverpool’s Defensive Dilemma
With Virgil van Dijk turning 35 in July and Ibrahima Konaté’s future uncertain, Liverpool faces a clear need to reinforce at the back. Joe Gomez remains injury-prone, and youngster Giovanni Leoni will miss the season through injury. Even if Konaté stays, additional reinforcements are essential.
Real Madrid’s Backline Concerns
Los Blancos are in a similarly precarious situation. Antonio Rüdiger’s contract expires this year, David Alaba struggles with injuries since his 2023 ACL tear, and Éder Militão has endured another injury-hit campaign.
Potential Targets
-
Konaté – Could enter free agency and become a top target for Madrid.
-
Nico Schlotterbeck – Borussia Dortmund vice-captain, 26, with one year left on his contract.
-
Castello Lukeba – 23-year-old Bundesliga talent, less experienced than Schlotterbeck.
-
Joel Ordóñez – 21-year-old Ecuadorian prospect at Club Brugge; long-term project.
-
Micky van de Ven – 24-year-old Dutchman, talented and athletic; could move if Tottenham face relegation.
Both clubs face a summer of strategic planning as they rebuild their defences without the availability of Upamecano.
