Benfica coach Jose Mourinho spoke without hesitation about the scandal that occurred in the Champions League play-off match against Real Madrid, as part of the 1/8 round of the Champions League.
As a reminder, the match played in Lisbon was overshadowed by an incident that occurred between Benfica’s Argentine player, Gianluca Presstianni, and Vinicius Junior.
After scoring the goal, the Brazilian complained to the referee that the Argentine had insulted him on racial grounds and called him a “monkey.”
Mourinho rightly refused to defend his player, but he also did not want to attack the opponent, and defended fair play and invoked the presumption of innocence.
“I don’t want to wear either the white Real Madrid shirt or the red Benfica shirt,” Mourinho said and continued:
“If it is proven that my player has not respected these principles, which are both my principles and Benfica’s, his career with me is over. There is love for the player, but there is no unconditional support. If he is truly guilty, I will never see him the same way again and he is finished with me.”
We remind you that after this match, UEFA suspended Prestianni, who will not be able to play in the Champions League until the investigation is completed.
If it is proven that he indeed racially abused Vinicius, he could be suspended for ten matches.
