Robert Lewandowski will not be available for Barcelona as they attempt to overturn a 4-0 deficit to Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey semi-finals.
The 37-year-old striker is out due to injury and will miss Tuesday’s match at 9:00 PM at the Spotify Camp Nou.
The Catalan club confirmed the news with an official statement: “Lewandowski suffered a trauma in yesterday’s match against Villarreal. Tests carried out today diagnosed a bone fracture on the inner side of the left eye socket. The player will miss Tuesday’s match against Atlético de Madrid,” the Catalan club said in a statement.
The injury occurred in the 88th minute of the match against Villarreal, when his face collided with the shoulder of defender Pau Navarro. Lewandowski immediately felt pain around his eye, but managed to continue the game and even scored the fourth goal into an empty net after an assist from Jules Kounde.
The Pole joins a list of absences that includes the suspended Eric García, as well as the injured Frenkie de Jong, Andreas Christensen and Gavi.
With Barcelona needing a major upset to secure the Copa del Rey final, Lewandowski’s absence is a heavy blow for coach Hansi Flick, who currently only has Ferran Torres as a central striker available.
